Crossing the Red Line: PM Meloni Shifts Stance, Backs Sanctions Against Israel | DISCUSS

In a dramatic shift from her traditionally strong pro-Israel position, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has signaled that Italy will support European Union sanctions against Israel following what she described as the "crossing of a red line" in the ongoing conflict.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly and later in a briefing on March 27, 2026, Meloni stated that while Israel initially had a right to self-defense after the October 7, 2023, attacks, its recent military campaign has "exceeded the limits of proportionality".

The "Red Line" and Accusations of a Massacre

The Prime Minister’s shift in rhetoric follows recent reports of high civilian casualties in Gaza and, more recently, reports of an Israeli strike hitting a girls' school in Minab, southern Iran:

Civilian Slaughter: Meloni accused the Israeli government of "violating humanitarian norms" and causing a "slaughter of civilians".

Settlement Expansion: She also condemned Israel's continued expansion of settlements in the West Bank, calling it a deliberate attempt to block the creation of a Palestinian state.

"Step Out of the Trap": Meloni urged the Israeli leadership to "step out of the trap of war," emphasizing that long-term security cannot be achieved through military force alone.

Italy’s Support for EU Sanctions

Italy has now officially joined several other European nations in backing restrictive measures proposed by the European Commission:

Targeting Far-Right Ministers: Sanctions are expected to target specific Israeli officials known for "violent statements" and advocating for settlement expansion.

Trade Restrictions: Italy supports removing preferential trade access for Israeli imports and potentially suspending elements of the EU-Israel Association Agreement.

Settlement Ban: Mandatory labeling or outright bans on products originating from occupied territories are under active discussion within the Italian Senate.

Strategic Context: The 2026 War on Iran

Meloni’s current frustration is also tied to the broader U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, which began on February 28, 2026:

International Law: On March 11, 2026, Meloni stated that the U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran were "not in line with international law".

Defensive Support Only: While Italy is providing air defense assistance to Gulf countries (like Qatar and Oman) targeted by Iranian retaliatory strikes, Meloni has made it clear that no Italian troops will participate in the offensive military operations against Tehran.

"A State's reaction must never be motivated by a feeling of revenge. This is why States are what they are. Protection of the civilian population is the boundary within which a State's reaction must remain." — Giorgia Meloni.
